A rare piece (well, two pieces) of good news for the music industry as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry reported that global revenue rose to $16.5 billion last year. While that’s only a 0.3% boost, it’s far from insignificant; in fact, it’s the first increase since 1999.

This may be partly attributed by a separate report by the NPD Group that reveals p2p filesharing fell 17% in the US last year. Say what you like about stingy royalties from free music streaming services, a pittance is better than nowt…

It sounded dodgy when we first wrote about it, and now an investigation by The Quietus into Amoeba's system of selling digitised copies of their rarest records without actually owning the rights to do so seems to have confirmed our misgivings. Library music fiend Johnny Trunk had this to say: "I think if the albums they have for sale digitally are genuinely impossible to trace (in terms of ownership) then I see no problem with this - in fact it has been standard practise for a few years if the original artists of an obscure/private album have disappeared off the face of the earth. But to have library music up there as downloads without licensing it is not right. And it's very easy to license these days."
