Nedry – In A Dim Light

Album review

Returning off the back of their well received debut Condors, Nedry are again back with an album that ecletically mixes trip hop with a range of electronica. While associations with the likes of Massive Atatck may be lazy, it’s deffinitely a good barometer to describe the kind of non-genre bands like this inhabit at the moment. Front woman Ayu Okakita has a Sinead O’Connor like quality to her voice, while the music from Chris Amblin and Matt Parker traverses ambience, electro and and hints of techno with ease. Split across London, Bristol and Osaka, the range of influences those cities offer up certainly show through here, from the dubby Havana Nights to the minimal Here.Now.Here. A must buy for fans of the eclectic.

Spontaneous Rhythm Sampler
Is this cheating? This week's spotlight goes on not an album by one artist, and not really an official compilation. This weeks review is on a small compilation of alternative and experimental electronica going around on a few mediafire links. A collection of tracks from the Manchester based SR label, this shows that 1) there's loads of talent to be had up North and 2) label owner John Howes definitely has a good taste and ear for music. Channeling the same vibe as Tri Angle and Kompakt releases, tracks from the likes of Mogadishu push forward the super stoned dub sound, while Cutoff! Cutoff! have a bouncier club friendly sound. All in all a label well worth checking out, with more than a couple of gems under its belt, get hunting for the rest of their releases.
