Ok so the title computer game prog may not make sense but this new project featuring Joe Howe AKA “Germlin” who was also in tennis short clad energetic performers, “Gay Against You”. “Ben Butler and Mousepad” is a psychedelic frenzy of old gaming sounds structured in a 70′s prog fashion through a melodic journey of erm well joy.
Having done remixes for artists as varied as “Klaxons”, “Deerhoof” and “Shitdisco”, Joe has moved from his base in Glasgow to gather inspiration from the vast and artistic city that is Berlin. He had a dream about the name and a character called Ben Butler in July 2008, and work began on this project shortly after. Having been described as ‘Nerdcore’ it brings up an image of people wearing big glasses and bright jumpers, and carrying around portable Yamaha keyboards in their backpacks, and that is quite close to the truth.
I have included a video for “Ben Butler and Mousepad’s” ‘Supermotion’ which was created for ‘Shhh! A Night of (not so) Silent Films’ at The Arches on the 22nd of February 2009, it was created by Charlotte Carden and Gavin Laing, both studying Digital Film and Television at the RSAMD. The song that you can stream is ‘Mousepad’ which should be the sound track to a futuristic sci-fi thriller from the 80′s.
Combining deep 60s psychedelic grooves with the minimal looping work recently found within work by the likes of Walls and Caribou, Django Django come along and add a hint of spice to the sound.
